Element

A foundational symbolic principle used to describe patterns of matter, process, temperament, transformation, and natural order.

Definition

An element is a foundational principle used in classical, alchemical, Hermetic, and symbolic traditions to describe basic patterns of reality and transformation.

The four classical elements are Fire, Water, Air, and Earth.

Expanded Explanation

In Hermetic and alchemical study, the elements are not only physical substances.

They are symbolic principles that describe how reality behaves, changes, and takes form. Fire transforms. Water dissolves and receives. Air moves and communicates. Earth stabilizes and gives form.

Together, the elements create a basic grammar of transformation.

The elements may be studied in matter, nature, the body, plants, metals, symbols, rituals, temperaments, and alchemical processes. They help the student ask what kind of force is active in a text, image, plant, practice, or stage of the work.

Within hermetic alchemy, the elements are studied as a beginner foundation for symbolic literacy. They teach that transformation is not one process, but a balance of heat, flow, movement, and form.
