Purification

The process of cleansing, clarifying, separating, or refining what is mixed, obscured, heavy, or unprepared.

Definition

Purification is the process of cleansing, clarifying, separating, or refining something so that it becomes clearer, cleaner, more ordered, or more prepared for transformation.

In alchemical and Hermetic symbolism, purification may occur through Fire, Water, Air, Earth, discipline, study, trial, washing, or repeated refinement.

Expanded Explanation

Purification is one of the central patterns of alchemical and symbolic study.

It does not always mean making something “perfect” immediately. More often, purification means preparing the material for deeper work. What is confused must be clarified. What is mixed must be separated. What is heavy must be refined. What is clouded must be made visible.

In alchemy, purification may appear through images of washing, burning, filtering, distilling, dissolving, calcining, or separating subtle from gross. Fire may purify through heat. Water may purify through washing. Air may purify through circulation. Earth may purify through grounding and stabilization.

Within hermetic alchemy, purification is studied as both a symbolic process and a practice of disciplined attention. The student purifies understanding by reading carefully, comparing sources, correcting assumptions, and returning to the work with humility.
